Tattoo placements: pain, healing and session time

Where you put a tattoo changes a lot: how much it hurts, how long the session takes, how fast the skin heals and how the tattoo ages. Below is a comparison of every placement, each with its own guide and photos of work from our studio.

Does the placement affect the price?

The price depends mainly on the size and detail of the design. Placement affects it indirectly: on trickier skin, such as the ribs, hands or feet, the session takes longer.

Common questions about tattoo placement

On our pain scale the lowest are: forearm, leg, and upper arm. The highest: foot, hand, and ribs.

The slowest to heal, up to 35 days: thigh, back, stomach, chest, and ribs. The fastest: hand.

Low-pain placements work well for a first tattoo, for example forearm, leg, and upper arm. The final choice is best made at a free consultation — we will match the placement to the design.
